Abstract

This editorial introduces the launch of Sustainable Construction and Risks (SCR), a new international, open-access, peer-reviewed journal at the intersection of sustainable built-environment innovation and systematic risk governance. It outlines the profound transformation of the construction industry under compound pressures such as climate change, urbanisation, complex engineering uncertainties, and increasingly stringent low-carbon and sustainability regulations, with risks, sustainability, digitalisation, and decision making identified as key drivers. Since construction objects are unique and built only once, their life cycle is exposed to multi-source risks from external and internal environments, temporary project teams, construction sites, and other factors. The editorial emphasises continuous risk evaluation and management across macro, meso, and micro levels, and the integration of sustainability aspects, life-cycle assessment (LCA), environmental product declarations (EPD), and green-building standards. SCR aims to break disciplinary boundaries by combining advanced theories, computational technologies, and practical engineering experience to promote safe, resilient, low-carbon, and sustainable development. Its interdisciplinary scope covers sustainable construction and green engineering; risk quantification and management; decision making, modelling, and data analytics; structural integrity and resilient infrastructure; policy, standards, and risk governance; and frontier interdisciplinary research.
